Problems solved by technology

[0011] Since traditional passive-matrix display designs are limited in size and number of light-emitting elements, and active-matrix designs using TFTs have lower electrical performance and complex substrates and strict wiring requirements, device testing and fault detection are critical Manufacturing yield and display lifetime are important

Embodiment Construction

[0027] Reference figure 1 with image 3 In one embodiment of the present invention, the display device includes a substrate 10 having a display area 11. A plurality of pixels 80 are formed on the display substrate 10 and in the display area 11. Each pixel includes: a first electrode 12, one or more layers of luminescent material 14 formed on the first electrode 12, and The second electrode 16 formed on or more layers of the luminescent material 14 emits light in response to the current flowing through the luminescent material 14 from the first electrode 12 and the second electrode 16 by the driven electric signal. For each driven electrical signal, a drive circuit 30 is provided in the display area 11, and the drive circuit 30 provides the first electrode 12 or the second electrode 16 of the pixel 80 with the driven electrical signal corresponding to the desired pixel brightness value 72. Signal 40, the driven electrical signal 40 generates a current flowing through the lumines...

Abstract

Detecting faults in driving circuits within a display device is disclosed. The display device has an array of pixels formed over a substrate in a display area, each pixel having a driving circuit and an associated communication circuit, the communication circuits together forming a multi-pixel serial shift register. The multi-pixel serial shift register is used to shift desired pixel luminance values from a display controller through the multi-pixel serial shift register to corresponding driving circuits for driving the pixels with driven electrical signals to emit light corresponding to the desired pixel luminance values, and sensing electrical signals corresponding to the driven electrical signals with a sensing circuit. Further the sensed electrical signals are shifted by the multi-pixel serial shift register to the display controller and faults are detected in the driving circuits by analyzing the sensed electrical signals.

Description

Technical field [0001] The present invention relates to fault detection in a display device having a substrate with independent chiplets for controlling the pixel array and the distribution for communicating with the pixel array. Background technique [0002] Flat panel display devices are widely used in combination with computing devices, in portable devices, and in entertainment devices such as televisions. This type of display usually uses a plurality of pixels distributed on a substrate to display images. Each pixel includes several light-emitting elements (commonly referred to as sub-pixels) that usually emit red light, green light, and blue light to express each image element. As used herein, pixels and sub-pixels are not distinguished, and are referred to as a single light-emitting element. Various flat panel display technologies are known, for example, plasma displays, liquid crystal displays, and light emitting diode (LED) displays. [0003] Light emitting diodes (LEDs)...
