Embodiment Construction

[0012] The fiducial markers of the present application are typically multimodal fiducial markers for registration of different types of imaging data. The multimodal fiducial marker generally includes a first portion of at least one radiopaque material, and a second portion of a porous material capable of absorbing at least one high density radioactive material. The second portion at least partially surrounds the first portion.

[0013] More specifically, see figure 1 and figure 2 , in the exemplary embodiment, the first portion 12 of the multimodal fiducial marker 10 is a radiopaque material. A radiopaque material is a material that is not transparent to x-ray radiation, so it is visible in x-ray pictures and under fluoroscopy. Materials of sufficient density to be opaque to X-ray radiation are also typically visible on ultrasound scans. The first portion 12 will then be visible in CT, fluoroscopy, other x-ray based imaging systems as well as ultrasound imaging systems. ...

Abstract

A multimodal fiducial marker (10) for registration of data is disclosed. The multimodal fiducial marker (10) generally comprises a first portion (12) made from at least one radiopaque material and a second portion (14) made from a porous material capable of absorbing at least one radioactive material. The second portion (14) at least partially surrounds the first portion (12).

Description

technical field [0001] The present application relates generally to the field of imaging, and more specifically to image registration. Image registration is the process of spatially aligning images of the same or different objects. Image registration has many applications. For example, when investigating in vivo models of disease, multimodal imaging of the same animal or groups of different animals is required. In these studies, scans using multiple different imaging modalities can provide complementary information or data to identify, compare and track disease evolution. This information can be registered to align acquired images within a common coordinate system frame for result validation, planning, diagnosis, and other purposes. Such imaging modalities may include computed tomography (CT), fluoroscopy, positron emission tomography (PET), microPET, single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT), microSPECT, magnetic resonance (MR), ultrasound imaging Wait.
