Embodiment Construction

[0014] Referring now to the drawings, the present invention will be figure 1 The description will be made in the context of the communication network 10 shown. The communication network 10 includes a mobile communication network 120 having one or more base stations or wireless access points 110 for communicating with the mobile terminal 100. The mobile terminal 100 may include, for example, a cellular phone, a personal digital assistant, a laptop computer, or other mobile devices. The mobile communication network 120 is connected to a public switched telephone network (PSTN) 130 and to a packet data network (PDN) 140. The PSTN 130 is a circuit-switched network that provides voice and data communications, and particularly provides voice services for traditional telephones (such as telephone 150). PDN 140 includes a packet-switched network that implements known protocols (such as conventional Internet protocols) to route data packets from one endpoint to another endpoint. The P...

Abstract

Methods and apparatus for providing substitute media content to a communications device user during suspension of a communications session is disclosed. In an exemplary method, a communications device (100) suspends output of audio or video information (305, 405) flowing from a remote communications node, in response to a received suspend message (315, 415). The communications device (100) initiates playback of substitute media content until a resume message (345, 450) is received, whereupon the device (100) suspends playback of the substitute media content and resumes output of audio or video information (365, 470) flowing from the remote communications terminal.

Description

[0001] Related application [0002] This application claims the benefits of U.S. Provisional Patent Application 60 / 956039 filed on August 15, 2007 and U.S. Patent Application 11 / 862,447 filed on September 27, 2008, which are incorporated herein by reference. Background technique [0003] The present invention relates generally to communication systems, and more particularly to a method for providing alternative media to be played during a pause in a communication session. [0004] Users of the communication system are occasionally put on hold, whether during a person-to-person call or during a multi-person video conference session. Various systems have been developed, especially those used in commercial environments, to provide audio content such as "waiting" music or commercials for waiting callers to listen to. Typically, these systems are deployed at one end of the telephone connection, usually at the business end-after the caller is in a waiting state, music or other audio is co...
