[0013] overview
[0014] According to some embodiments of the present disclosure, a network device (eg, a master controller) may detect events in a computer network on a current path of a destination address prefix from a local network domain to a remote domain. In response, the device may dynamically (e.g., intelligently) determine the trace target destination address within the destination address prefix, and may perform (or request to perform) an alternative to the current path and network from the local network domain to the trace target. A traceroute for a selection of alternate paths, where the traceroute is used to obtain per-hop metrics along each traced path. These metrics may then be stored, eg, for optimal path selection, fault identification reporting, and the like.
