Problems solved by technology

While it might be conceivable that a solution would require more frequent location updates, this would undesirably tax the on-board processors of both the sender's and receiver's devices, let alone use higher-value devices with additional over-the-air wireless bandwidth

Embodiment Construction

[0020] Details and particulars of these aspects of the present technology will now be described below by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings.

[0021] Figure 1 is a flowchart outlining the steps of a method of generating and transmitting velocity, time and path data to enable a first wireless communication device to track a second wireless communication device. In an initial step 10, the tracking of one device to another is initiated. Here, this will be understood as initiating or activating a "follow-me" mode. Activation of the "follow me" mode can be done by the first device or by the second device, and can be done manually or automatically. Automatic triggering of the tracking mode can be done using a proximity detection subsystem that detects when a device has moved away from another device it is paired with. can use bluetooth TM Proximity detection is used to achieve this detection. when a bluetooth TM When the device moves away from its paired...

Abstract

A method of tracking a first wireless communications device using another computing device, such as a second wireless communications device, includes obtaining current position data for the first wireless communications device and obtaining one or more of speed data, time data, and path data for the first wireless communications device. The first wireless device then transmits the current position data and at least one of the speed data, time data and path data to the second wireless communications device or other computing device. In addition to current position data, the speed, path and time data facilitate tracking of the first wireless communications device. When a first mobile user wants a second mobile user to follow him, the first mobile user can put his device in ''follow me'' (tracking) mode. This is particularly useful when the first and second mobile users are traveling in respective cars or other vehicles.

Description

technical field [0001] The present disclosure relates generally to wireless communication devices and, more particularly, to wireless communication devices having a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver or other such position determination capability. Background technique [0002] Some wireless communication devices have a Global Positioning System (GPS) chipset (or an external Bluetooth TM attachment), the GPS chipset converts radio frequency signals received from orbiting GPS satellites into real-time coordinates of longitude and latitude, which are typically accurate to within a few meters of the device's actual current location. This current location (i.e., longitude and latitude coordinates) can then be sent wirelessly to a recipient with another wireless communication device (or to any other networked computing device via a cellular base station and the Internet), allowing the recipient to use Any of the many mapping apps available, such as BlackBerry Maps TM , Go...
