Problems solved by technology

However, when too many LEDs of different colors are coupled into the waveguide, colored bands can appear in the output light because internal reflections of light can cause the light from the LEDs to leave the lighting system at different angles
Avoiding these problems would result in complex and expensive designs for waveguides, or any other technique for color mixing

Embodiment Construction

[0026] exist figure 2 In, there is shown a lighting system 100 according to a presently preferred embodiment of the present invention, such as a flat transparent lamp. A first group of light sources 101 and a second group of light sources 102 are coupled to a first waveguide 103 and a second waveguide 104 (a group of light sources and a light mixing device together form a subsystem) which act as a light mixing device and are arranged to combine light Transfers from the light source to the illuminated object. The waveguide can be constructed from a transparent material such as glass or polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA). To solve the above-mentioned problem of colored banding, the illumination system according to the present invention uses a limited number (eg, but not limited to, two, three or four) of differently colored light sources coupled to each waveguide 103,104. exist figure 2 In the typical system shown in , the first group 101 includes blue, green and red LEDs with p...

Abstract

The invention relates to an illumination system (200) comprising a first sub system (205). The first sub system (205) comprises a first set (201) of at least two differently colored light sources and a first light mixing device (203), wherein the first set (201) is provided with a first spectral distribution. The first light mixing device is arranged in a direction of light-emission of the first set of the light sources and is configured to mix light emitted by the first set of the light sources. The illumination system also comprises a second sub system (206). The second sub system (206) comprises a second set (202) of at least two light sources and a second light mixing device (204), wherein the second set (202) is provided with a second spectral distribution. The second light mixing device (204) is arranged in a direction of light-emission of the second set of the light sources and is configured to mix the light emitted by the second set of the light sources. The light sources are selected so that the first spectral distribution and the second spectral distribution complement each other, so that a color rendering index (CRI) of the light emitted from the illumination system (200) is greater than the CRI of the light emitted from each of the sub systems. Furthermore, the first sub system (205) and the second sub system (206) are arranged to emit at least one common color, such as a shade of white.

Description

technical field [0001] The invention relates to a lighting system with groups of light sources for emitting light. Background technique [0002] Recently, great strides have been made in increasing the brightness of light emitting diodes (LEDs). As a result, LEDs have become sufficiently bright and inexpensive as light sources, eg, in lighting systems such as adjustable color lamps, direct view liquid crystal displays (LCDs), and in front and rear projection displays. [0003] Any number of colors can be produced by mixing LEDs of different colors, eg white. Adjustable color lighting systems are typically constructed using a number of primary colors, in one example, the three primary colors red, green and blue. The color of the light produced is determined by the LEDs used and the mixing ratio. In order to produce "white", all three LEDs must be on. [0004] One of the disadvantages of using LEDs is that their bands are relatively narrow. Thus, the combination of severa...
