Embodiment Construction

[0053] first embodiment

[0054] Referring to Figure 1, in a telecommunications system (eg British Telecom system), customer premises equipment 1 (eg a telephone or a computer terminal with a modem) is connected to a first public switched telephone network (PSTN) 2 and (through network 2) Connected to the second public switched telephone network 3 . Via the networks 2, 3, the user terminal 1 is connected to a service provider 4 (eg a database host).

[0055] In PSTN2, subscriber terminal 1 is connected to exchange 5, which is connected to tandem office 6 connected to second PSTN3. An external telephone network 7 is accessible from the user terminal 1 via the first or second network 2, 3.

[0056] In Figure 1, straight lines represent physical connections between devices, and curved arrows represent billing flow. Typically, the operator of the first network 2 sends the user a bill for his quarterly, or generally regular, use of the network. The operator of the second networ...

Abstract

A communication system comprising a communication utilising apparatus (1) connectable to a communications network (2), and service provision apparatus (2, 3 or 4) for making services available to the communications utilising apparatus, characterised by the provision, associated with the communications utilising apparatus, of an accounting device (12) comprising a digital data storage device (22) arranged to store details of the receipt of services by the communications utilising apparatus (1); a signalling circuit (16) arranged to receive, via the communications network (2), signals indicating a payment due in respect of services provided by the service provision apparatus (2, 3 or 4); and a comparison device (14) arranged to compare the received indications with data derived from the stored details.

Description

[0001] This application is a divisional application of an application with an application date of December 4, 1995, an application number of 200410003339.3, and an invention title of "communication device". technical field [0002] The present invention relates to communication devices, and more particularly to communication devices for providing and acquiring products and services from one or more communication service providers or services provided over a communication channel. [0003] The present invention primarily, but not exclusively, contemplates the provision of telecommunication services by one or more telecommunication providers to a subscriber. [0004] More specifically, the present invention relates primarily to the communication of billing or charging information. At present, different telecommunication service providers charge according to different standards, and data network service providers (such as local area networks) often charge at a fixed rate regardle...
