Problems solved by technology

These devices are simple and inexpensive to use, but they require needle insertion for each injection, usually three to four times a day
Second mode infusion pump therapy, which requires the purchase of an expensive pump that lasts about three years
In theory, this type of device offers many of the advantages of an infusion pump without the added cost and inconvenience
Unfortunately, however, many of these devices suffer from discomfort including (due to the gauge and / or length of the injection needle used), the substance to be delivered and the materials used in the construction of the infusion set. Disadvantages such as compatibility and interaction between devices, and possible malfunction if improperly activated by the user (e.g. "wet" injection due to premature activation of the device)
Difficulties were also encountered in manufacturing and controlling needle penetration depth, especially when using shorter and / or finer gauge needles
The potential for needle sticks to injure people who come into contact with the device used is also a concern

Embodiment Construction

[0169] Embodiments of the invention described below may be used as a convenient, tablet-like device for delivering pre-measured doses of a substance, such as a drug or drug, to a user via an adhesive-attached infusion set. The device is self-contained and attached to the user's skin surface by an adhesive provided on the bottom surface. After being properly positioned and activated by the user, the pressure of a relaxed Belleville spring or other Belleville spring on the surface of the container in the device can be used to empty the contents of the flexible container through one or more patient microneedles via the needle manifold . The contents of the container are then delivered into the user's skin via microneedles that are driven into the skin. It should be understood that other embodiments are possible in which a different type of stored energy device (which may be mechanical, electrical and / or chemical) is substituted for the Belleville or Belleville springs.

Abstract

A system and method for a patch-like, self-contained substance infusion device (700) which provides hidden patient needles (760) that includes a rigid bladder (712) used with a non-distensible bladder film (740), such as a metallized film. The device (700) can be attached to skin via an adhesive surface and a push button (780) activation assembly can be used to remove an interlock (730), allowing a disk, or Belleville spring (735) assembly to apply constant pressure to a fluid reservoir assembly (710). The push button (780) assembly allows the release of one or more spring-loaded patient needles (760) into the skin, and establishes a fluid path between the patient needles (760) and the pressurized fluid reservoir thereby delivering an infusion into the skin. The push button (780) activation assembly further allows the release of safety mechanisms (794) which are driven by spring (793) and released by trap-door (790).
