Embodiment

[0041] Fabric blank 1 is manufactured from a suitable airbag material and has a width of 1909 mm and a length of 6180 mm. On blank 1, an annular tablet with a diameter of 710 mm was drawn. A plurality of annular tablets are arranged closely adjacent to each other on the blank 1 . 23 annular webs were drawn on blank 1, resulting in 11.5 airbags. The utilization rate of the fabric for the endless web was 77%. The fabric utilization here is simply calculated by calculating the amount of fabric utilized in the manufacture of the endless web. The volume of the resulting annular airbag is 60 liters (when inflated without the internal cord).

[0042]Fabric blank 2 is manufactured from a suitable airbag material and has a width of 1909 mm and a length of 6180 mm. On the blank 2, a regular dodecagon tablet with a side length of 118 mm is drawn. The regular dodecagonal tablets are arranged on the blank 1 such that 2 to 6 sides of each tablet coincide with the sides of the adjacent ...

Abstract

A twelve-sided polygon-shaped air bag (10) comprised of fabric for use in vehicle restraint systems and methods of manufacture is disclosed. The air bag (10) is constructed from fabric panels in the shape of congruent, twelve-sided polygons, which may be regular dodecagons (22) or dodecagons (32) having alternating short and long sides. The individual panels may be in the form of a single dodecagon, or in the form of two abutting dodecagons (24). The use of dodecagon-shaped panels allows for economical fabric utilization and increased fabrication efficiency, compared with panels having a circular shape.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to an inflatable air cushion for a vehicle occupant restraint device, and more particularly, the present invention relates to an air cushion composed of two superimposed dodecagonal fabric panels, which may or may not have a common side. During the manufacturing process, the sheets are overlapped and connected along their overlapped edge portions to form a dodecagonal cushioning air cushion. technical background [0002] Inflated protective cushions or airbags play an important role in preventing vehicle occupants from being injured in collisions with the vehicle body. Typically, the airbag is installed in a support structure opposite or adjacent to the vehicle seat, such as a steering wheel, instrument panel, door panel, or other vehicle body fixed structure. When the airbag is rapidly deployed by reactive air released from the gas generator during an impact, it acts as a protective barrier between the vehicle occupant ...
