Problems solved by technology

[0006] When the service provides access to a server external to the mobile communication network, this potentially poses a problem for any contractual and regulatory setting between the mobile communication network and the external server, as currently only the capability of the communication system through itself supports the communication session to determine the quality of service set for such a communication session

Embodiment Construction

[0040]The invention is now described by reference to specific non-limiting examples, and in particular to a Universal Mobile Telecommunications Service (UMTS) network connected to an Internet Protocol (IP) network. However, the choice of communication system is for illustration purposes only. The invention is applicable to any packet-switched communication network with a connection to an external server, and where a service level is established between the user and the packet-switched network.

[0041] Referring to Fig. 1, there is schematically illustrated a packet-switched mobile communication system in which the present invention can be implemented

[0042] Preferred embodiment of the invention.

[0043] Referring to Figure 1, three cells 8a, 8b and 8c of a cellular structure are shown. Each cell is defined by the radio coverage of a corresponding base transceiver station (BTS) 2a, 2b and 2c. Each base transceiver station is associated with a respective antenna 4a, 4b, 4...

Abstract

There is disclosed a method and apparatus for controlling service level requirements between a communication network and a user equipment associated with an end-user connected in the communication network, in which the user equipment communicates with an external service via the communication network, the method comprising determining the end-user service level in dependence on a service level specification determined by the communication network and the external service.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to the control of service level provisioning in Internet Protocol (IP) networks, and in particular but not exclusively to service level provisioning in IP networks connected to mobile telecommunication networks such as Universal Mobile Telecommunications Services (UMTS) networks supply control. Background technique [0002] Packet-switched mobile telecommunications networks provide an interface between mobile stations and Internet Protocol (IP) networks. One example of such a packet switched system is the Universal Mobile Telecommunications Service (UMTS) system. [0003] In such systems, communication is initiated between the mobile station and an application server or another mobile station after a Packet Data Protocol (PDP) context has been established between the mobile station and the UMTS network. In current systems, Quality of Service (QoS) is applied in the UMTS domain based on the Quality of Service (QoS) reques...
