Problems solved by technology

The disadvantage of using a precomputed table is that the values used for the table must be precomputed and stored, which requires additional hardware resources
This approach is particularly problematic when the same converter is used for multiple combinations of input and output sample rates

Embodiment Construction

[0024] The present invention will be described more fully hereinafter with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which a preferred embodiment is shown. However, the present invention can be used in many different embodiments and is not limited to the embodiments described herein.

[0025] The method of the present invention is a variant of interpolation in which an integer accumulator 220 is used to calculate the relative position in time of the input and output samples. For linear interpolation, this method uses two positive integer constants A and B to calculate the timing relationship between two input samples and one output sample. If the sampling period of the input signal is T x , and the sampling period of the output signal is T y , then select A and B such that A and B satisfy the following equation:

[0026] A / B=T x / T y The actual values or sizes of A and B depend on the level of precision desired, among other considerations. In the implementation, the i...

Abstract

A sample rate converter (200) is described for converting an input data stream including a plurality of input samples (X) at one sample rate to an output data stream including a plurality of output samples (Y) at another sample rate. The converter uses an interpolation approach that utilizes an integer accumulator (220) to track the timing relation between input samples and output samples. Based on the value of the accumulator, the method determines if the correct input samples are being used to calculate the current output sample. If so, the output sample is calculated as a function of the input samples and the accumulator value. The converter provides the robustness of a table based conversion approach without the need to precalculate and store a table, simplifies the calculations involved, and is less sensitive to numeric round off errors.

Description

field of invention [0001] The invention relates to field sampling rate conversion of digital signals. In particular, the invention relates to sample rate conversion methods employing integer accumulators to compute the timing relationship of input and output samples. Background of the invention [0002] In many electronic applications, signals are represented and processed digitally. Numeric words, or samples, representing data values at equal time intervals. This equal time interval is often referred to as the sampling rate, and is usually expressed in units of kilohertz (kHz), which represents the reciprocal of the sampling time interval. [0003] Sometimes there are cases where the available data sampling rate is different from the expected sampling rate. Depending on the characteristics of the sample data and the difference between the available and desired sampling rates, several methods can be used to convert a signal according to one sampling rate to a signal acc...
