Abstract

A molten salt membrane electrolysis device may include an anolyte chamber containing a molten salt anolyte that mainly includes a chloride salt and a lithium carbonate (Li2CO3) feed material. The first electrode assembly and the second electrode assembly are respectively provided with corresponding anodes; a cathode enclosure proximate the first anode within the anolyte compartment and in fluid contact with the molten salt anolyte, and having a primary transfer portion including a porous membrane; and a cathode located within the first catholyte compartment such that the primary transfer portion is disposed between the respective anode and cathode. The power supply may be configured to apply a potential between the first anode and the first cathode sufficient to initiate electrolysis of lithium carbonate and greater than a potential required to initiate electrolysis of LiCl.

Description

[0001] CROSS-REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATIONS [0002] This application claims the benefit of US Provisional Patent Application Serial No. 62 / 878,444, filed July 25, 2019, the entire contents of which are incorporated herein by reference. technical field [0003] In one aspect of the present invention, the present invention relates to molten salt electrolysis, in particular to an electrolysis apparatus for molten salt electrolysis and a method for producing lithium metal from lithium carbonate. Background technique [0004] Molten salt electrolysis has been widely used for over a hundred years, including the Hall-Heroult method for aluminum, the Dow and IG Farben methods for magnesium, and the Downs method for alkali metals. Most commercial-scale molten salt electrolysis methods use chloride or fluoride electrolytes because these electrolytes are the solvents that facilitate the electrolytic deposition of the target metal from oxides, chlorides, or other compounds of the ta...
