Embodiment Construction

[0019] In a general sense, the present invention is based on the sensible insight of combining the on-site generation of ECAS with a sensor set that allows control of output purity when using poorly defined input liquids or liquid mixtures. According to the invention, this is achieved by measuring the output of hypochlorite and the redox potential of the output liquid.

[0020] The term "ECAS" refers to any electrochemically active solution. More specifically, ECAS is a sodium chloride electrochemically activated solution. Any source of chloride anions can be used for this reaction, but sodium chloride is used here as an example. As a result of the electrochemical activation, the solution (hereinafter also referred to as "hypochlorite / hypochlorous acid solution") comprises a mixture of hypochlorite anions and hypochlorous acid (i.e. a mixture of oxidized chloride ions, the ratio of which depends on the medium surrounding pH). According to the practice in this field, ECAS ca...

Abstract

Disclosed is a set-up for an oral irrigator, as a system of components and preferably as a single, hand-held device. Herein a provision is made to dispense oral irrigation fluid comprising antimicrobial ions / chemical species produced in situ (in the system or device) by electrolysis of an appropriate salt solution, i.e., an electrochemically activated solution (ECAS). The production of ECAS is enabled by providing an electrolysis chamber. The ECAS output liquid is controlled by means of two different sensors, viz. a hypochlorite sensor and an ORP (oxidation reduction potential) sensor. The sensors allow the determination of undesirable contaminants after ECAS generation, by determining a possible difference in the increase (or decrease) of the values for hypochlorite and ORP.

Description

technical field [0001] The invention belongs to the field of oral care and relates to the production and administration of oral care antibacterial agents in the oral cavity of a subject. In particular, the present invention relates to an integrated system for oral irrigation and administration of electrochemically activated solutions (ECAS). Background technique [0002] Dental plaque is a biofilm, or group of bacteria, that grows on various surfaces in the mouth, often between teeth and along the edges of the necks. Dental plaque is also known as microbial plaque, oral biofilm, tooth biofilm, dental plaque biofilm or bacterial plaque biofilm. While dental plaque is often associated with oral diseases such as dental caries and periodontal disease (gum disease), such as periodontitis and gingivitis, its formation is a normal process that cannot be prevented. [0003] Plaque can cause dental caries (tooth decay) -- the localized destruction of tooth tissue by acids produced ...
