Problems solved by technology

[0003] When there are more than a few satellites in the payload, for example, ten or more satellites in the payload, it is difficult to deploy the satellites in relatively rapid succession within the allowable time window because within their satellites are extremely close together and there is an inherent risk of potential collision before attitude control and propulsion systems are engaged

Embodiment Construction

[0016] figure 1 A satellite 100 is depicted in accordance with the present teachings. figure 2 An "exploded" view depicting some salient features of satellite 100. now refer to figure 1 and 2 , satellite 100 includes an integral payload module 102 , propulsion module 114 , payload antenna module 122 , bus assembly module 132 , and solar array system 140 arranged as shown. have to be aware of is, figure 1 and 2 The orientation of the satellite 100 is "inverted" in the usage sense, and the antenna 124 facing "up" in the figure would be facing "down" toward the earth.

[0017] The integral payload module 102 includes panels 104 , 106 and 108 . In some embodiments, the panels are joined together in known manner using various connectors and the like. Braces 109 provide structural reinforcement to the joined panels.

[0018] Panels 104, 106, and 108 function as heat sinks to radiate heat from satellite 102, in addition to any other function. In some embodiments, the panel ...

Abstract

A satellite deployment system has a plurality of releasable dispenser modules that are attached to each other with each module carrying satellites. Each dispenser module acts as an individual final stage with its own propulsion unit and deploys a subset of satellites to the appropriate altitude and orbit. Since each dispenser module can deploy its satellites far from other dispenser modules, the risk of collision among the satellites is greatly reduced, which allows a large number of satellites to be launched in a safe, timely and cost-effective manner.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to satellites, and in particular, to a system and method for assembling and deploying multiple satellites from a vehicle. Background technique [0002] Satellites typically use multi-stage vehicles such as rockets to reach insertion orbits before they are individually separated and flown to their final orbits. Since the vehicle has a finite amount of power and propulsion, the satellites in the payload should be deployed within a relatively short time window, typically within a few hours. [0003] When there are more than a few satellites in the payload, for example, ten or more satellites in the payload, it is difficult to deploy the satellites in relatively rapid succession within the allowable time window because within their Satellites are extremely close together and there is an inherent risk of potential collision before the attitude control and propulsion systems come into play. [0004] Accordingly, there is a nee...
