Abstract

The catheter may include electrodes for transvascular nerve stimulation. Electrodes may be positioned within the lumen of the catheter and aligned with holes in the outer wall of the catheter. The electrodes generate a focused electric field that stimulates one or more nerves. In one embodiment, the catheter may include a proximal electrode set and a distal electrode set, and the proximal electrode may stimulate the patient's left phrenic nerve and the distal electrode may stimulate the patient's right phrenic nerve.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims the benefit of U.S. Provisional Patent Application No. 61 / 907,993, filed November 22, 2013, entitled "Apparatus for Assisted Breathing by Transvascular Nerve Stimulation and Related Methods," under 35 U.S.C. §119(e). The entire disclosure of the '993 provisional application is hereby incorporated by reference. technical field [0003] Embodiments of the present disclosure relate to medical devices and in particular to devices suitable for repair, augmentation or modulation of impaired neurophysiological function. Particular embodiments provide devices for stimulating diaphragmatic muscle via transvascular electrical stimulation of nerves to assist breathing. Background technique [0004] Electrical stimulation of nerves is widely used in the treatment of various conditions and can be applied to control muscle activity or generate sensation. Nerves can be stimulated by placing electrodes in, ar...
