Embodiment Construction
[0061] By way of background, the present invention employs self-expanding materials such as polymer gels. The material can employ a hydrophilic polymer network that absorbs water but does not dissolve. The hydrophilic character can be provided by functional groups on the polymer such as hydroxyl, carboxyl or amide functional groups. Preferably, the self-expanding polymer network comprises at least one compound comprising -COOH, >C=0, -OH or -NH 2 base monomer. Resistance to solubility is a result of the presence of structural crosslinks, crystalline regions or entanglements. Such materials are typically referred to as "hydrogels". Hydrogels consist of two components, a constant amount of polymer network (i.e. gel) and a variable water content. In the anhydrous state (before injection), the material is often referred to as a xerogel. Anhydrous materials are hygroscopic and absorb / absorb water from their native environment to hydrate the network. A self-expanding polymer n...
