Abstract

A non-mechanical valve arrangement for use with a circulating fluidized bed (CFB) having a CFB reaction chamber and a bubbling fluidized bed (BFB) within an enclosure in a lower portion of the CFB reaction chamber, the BFB containing in-bed heat exchange tor (IBHX). The flow of solids from the BFB enclosure to the CFB reaction chamber can be controlled by one or more non-mechanical valves. Each non-mechanical valve is independently controlled by an independently controlled fluidization device. The non-mechanical valve has a collector to collect solids that sift back into the fluidization device of the valve. Remove clumps that may be clogging the valve. Channel walls parallel to the direction of solids flow through the valve opening may be arranged to reduce external interference with localized fluidization to maintain proper function of the non-mechanical valve.

Description

Background technique [0001] The present invention relates generally to the field of circulating fluidized bed (CFB) reactors and boilers, such as those used in power generation facilities and industrial facilities. The invention particularly relates to CFB reactor installations comprising both a CFB and one or more bubbling fluidized beds (BFBs) which feed material into the lower portion of the CFB reactor enclosure, and the invention relates to Non-mechanical valve used to control the flow of solids between the slow bubbling bed zone and the highly fluidized CFB zone. [0002] Reactors and boilers can use CFBs and BFBs together in a variety of arrangements. For example, US Patent No. 5,533,471 teaches placing a slow moving BFB below and beside the bottom of a faster moving CFB chamber. In US Patent No. 5,526,775, the slow BFB is located above and beside the fast CFB. US Patent No. 5,190,451 to Goldbach shows a CFB chamber that immerses a heat exchanger in a fluidized bed a...
