Embodiment Construction

[0010] figure 1 A high voltage power distribution system (EDS) 100 for an electrified vehicle 102 is illustrated. The high voltage battery 104 is electrically connected to the EDS assembly 106 . As understood by those skilled in the art, battery 104 may be comprised of a plurality of electrochemical cells. The EDS assembly 106 may contain wiring, connectors, contactors, bussed electrical center (BEC), fuses, or other connectors under the hood. EDS assembly 106 is powered by battery 104 . Vehicle high voltage system 110 is electrically connected to EDS assembly 106 through high voltage bus 108 . For example, high voltage system 110 may be a traction motor used to propel vehicle 102 . A controller 112 , such as a battery electronic control module, monitors the EDS assembly 106 and regulates the power limit of the battery 104 . For example, power limits may include discharge limits and charge limits. The controller 112 is connected to a data storage 114 .

Abstract

A primary current threshold is fit between an electrical capacity and electrical load for an electrical distribution component. When a first measured current exceeds the primary threshold, a power limit for the battery powering the component is reduced. When a second measured current is less than a secondary current threshold, the power limit is increased. The primary and secondary thresholds may be set for a plurality of time periods.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to electrified vehicles, and more particularly to current protection for high-voltage power distribution components. Background technique [0002] High-voltage power distribution components in electrified vehicles operate under various loads. Most loads (eg, 90th percentile loads) are well within the capacity of the electrical components, however some higher loads (eg, 95th or 99th percentile loads) will approach the capacity of the electrical components. This operation near the capacity of the components due to occasional higher loads can be reduced by increasing the electrical capacity of the components. [0003] However, increasing the electrical capacity also increases the cost of the components. It is desirable to increase the durability of components operating at higher loads without increasing the cost of the components. Contents of the invention [0004] An embodiment contemplates a current protection method f...
