An instant electromagnetic transient signal flowing through grounding conductors such as a metal shielding layer and a steel armour of the detected power cable is detected and recorded in a real-time and on-line mode, wherein the instant electromagnetic transient signal is generated when the detected XLPE power cable breaks down in a restorable mode; faults of the detected power cable are early warned through special criteria or a manual analysis method. By means of the on-line fault early-warning method of the XLPE power cable, one or more power cables can be detected on line, on-line detection devices are not forcibly required to be installed on all power cables connected to the same bus of a transformer substation, and therefore the system configuration is flexible, safe and reliable.
