[0018] Disclosed herein are techniques for black blood magnetic resonance angiography (BB-MRA), collectively referred to as local excited black blood imaging (LOBBI) techniques. The LOBBI technique does not require global radio frequency (RF) excitation and allows efficient black blood imaging when locally excited T / R coils are used, providing black blood targeting of blood originating both inside and outside the imaging plane / slice contrast. Thus, LOBBI sequences can be performed using local excitation coils of relatively small area (eg, having a footprint of less than 20 centimeters in some embodiments, and less than 10 centimeters in some embodiments).
