The index inquiry method comprises the following steps of: acquiring urban bus station data and bus global positioning system (GPS) data, and removing ineffective data from the bus GPS data; performing logic hierarchy division on urban bus stations to obtain an index tree comprising all stations, and generating a corresponding index sequence for each station; adding index fields to the urban bus GPS data according to regions where the urban bus GPS data are positioned according to the index sequence information; and supplying an inquiry interface to a user, and searching data according to an inquiry condition and the index sequences which are input by the user on the inquiry interface, and returning inquired vehicle information to the user in the form of a file. The invention also discloses an index inquiry system for the running information of the regional urban buses. By the method and the system, the time and space characteristics of bus traffic vehicle data are considered; and the method and the system are particularly suitable for extraction of regional urban bus data.
