[0012] Figure 1A A cross-sectional view of a multi-stage reciprocating compressor 10M is shown having a controller 12 electrically connected to a suction cutoff unloader valve assembly(s) 14 . In this multi-stage compressor, compression is done in two steps, where the first stage of compression (from suction pressure to intermediate pressure) is performed by the lower stage cylinder(s) and the second stage of compression (from intermediate pressure to discharge pressure) by (one or more) advanced cylinders. In addition to the suction cutoff unloader valve assembly 14, the compressor 10 includes a lower stage cylinder head 16L, a higher stage cylinder head 16H, an outer shell 18, a cylinder block 20, a lower stage cylinder bank 22L, a higher stage cylinder bank 22H, a lower stage cylinder 24L, a higher stage cylinder 24H , Piston 26, connecting rod 28, crankshaft 30, oil tank 32, suction manifold 34 and intermediate manifold 36. Each of the lower and upper cylinder heads 16L ...

Abstract

A reciprocating compressor includes a first cylinder and a second cylinder, first and second suction cutoff unloader valve assemblies, and a controller. The first and second suction cutoff unloader valve assemblies are integral to the compressor and are capable of a rapid cycling to interrupt flow of refrigerant to the first and second cylinders. The controller operates at least one of the first suction cutoff unloader valve assembly or second suction cutoff unloader valve assembly in the rapid cycling and monitor a number of rapid cycles. In another aspect, a multi-stage compressor comprises a lower pressure stage and a higher pressure stage, and at least one suction cutoff unloader valve assembly capable of a rapid cycling to interrupt flow of refrigerant to a lower stage cylinder.

Description

Background technique [0001] Refrigeration and air conditioning systems are often constructed with means for system capacity control, allowing the system to improve temperature control accuracy, reliability, and energy efficiency. [0002] Currently, the most common method of capacity control for refrigeration and air conditioning systems is accomplished through unit cycling (turning the compressor on and off in response to fluctuations in temperature or system pressure). However, unit cycles do not allow tight temperature control, so often create uncomfortable and / or undesirable temperature changes within the conditioned / refrigerated space. [0003] A suction regulating valve in the suction line downstream of the compressor is another device commonly used for system capacity control. However, suction regulator valves are expensive and inefficient for system capacity control. [0004] To overcome this, a suction cutoff unloader valve integrated into the compressor has been de...
