Embodiment Construction

[0026] The present invention realizes peer-to-peer sessions between users through routers in the transmission path of IP network, wherein communication resources can be reserved asymmetrically in routers according to different service levels desired or required by subscribers. Thus, each participating subscriber is able to receive data or media from a counterpart subscriber during a session in accordance with a desired level of service associated with the receiving subscriber.

[0027] In short, the required service level is indicated in session establishment messages (eg including SDP messages) exchanged between subscribers during the session establishment procedure. Thus, each router on the transmission path of the session can detect the service level indication in the session setup message sent by the subscriber and accordingly reserve communication resources in the router in the receive direction for that subscriber. Thus, regular SDP messages or other session establishmen...

Abstract

Method and apparatus in a router (200) of an IP network, for providing a relevant and expected service level for a first subscriber (A) in a peer-to-peer session with a second subscriber (B). When a session setup message (PATH) sent from the first subscriber is received (2:2) at the router, a required service level is detected from a service level indicator in the received message, and a service level definition of an operator of the first subscriber is obtained (2:3) for interpreting the service level indicator. Communication resources required for data transmission during the session are determined (2:4) according to the detected service level as interpreted by the service level definition. The determined communication resources are then booked (2:4) in the router, and the session setup message is forwarded (2:7) to a next hop node in the transmission path towards the second subscriber.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention generally relates to methods and apparatus for providing subscribers with relevant service levels during a peer-to-peer session by controlling communication resources in a router such that the subscriber's quality expectations can be met. Background technique [0002] Various multimedia services have been developed for packet-based communication using IP (Internet Protocol), generally involving media transmission with different formats and combinations between user terminals such as fixed or mobile computers and telephones. An architecture called "IP Multimedia Subsystem" (IMS) has also been developed to enable such multimedia services and sessions for user terminals connected to different access networks. [0003] In an IMS network, multimedia sessions are typically handled by a specific session control node using the signaling protocol "SIP" (Session Initiation Protocol) for establishing the session. For example, when a multime...
