Problems solved by technology

This reduces efficiency and makes the resource reservation process more difficult
[0011] Heterogeneity of shared computing resources can also lead to reduced efficiency
Without dedicated access to resources, the grid-level scheduler 102 is challenged with a high degree of inconsistency and unpredictability in the capacity of resources available for use

Embodiment Construction

[0032] Various embodiments of the invention are discussed in detail below. While specific implementations are discussed, it should be understood that this is done for illustration purposes only. A person skilled in the relevant art will understand that other components and configurations may be used without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.

[0033] Regarding the first major part of monitoring resource status 302 (power, temperature, etc.), the module uses multiple resource management capabilities and a native interface to gather at least one or more of the following parts of the information. The load "watts consumed per node" via the Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI) or other low-level interface is collected. Another part of the information concerns the load "CPU temperature per node" via IPMI or other low-level interface. Yet another parameter relates to the load "watts consumed" of non-computationally intelligent resources (including coo...

Abstract

A system, method and computer readable medium are disclosed for reducing power consumption in clusters, grids, on-demand centers, and so forth The principles disclosed herein can reduce both direct and indirect power consumption while maintaining either full cluster performance or adequate SLA based cluster performance The method includes receiving at least one state data point regarding power consumption or temperature of at least one resource within the compute environment Using intelligent policies to control power consumption, the method implements and interfaces with power managements facilities within the cluster, grid or on-demand center to either implement policies, make dynamic changes, make predictions or actions, and so forth to reduce one or more of the direct or indirect power consumption associated with a compute environment The method can analyze current workload, future workload or both in taking energy saving actions in the environment.
