[0022] figure 1 A prior art refrigeration system 20 is shown incorporating two cascade circuits 21 and 23 . The lower circuit 23 includes a compressor which delivers compressed refrigerant into the refrigerant to a refrigerant heat exchanger 24 . Heat exchanger 24 is preferably located outside the air-conditioned environment. From heat exchanger 24 , the refrigerant passes through expansion device 26 and into indoor heat exchanger 28 . Fan 30 blows air over the exterior surface of indoor heat exchanger 28 and delivers this conditioned air into environment 32 as is known. The lower circuit 23 will normally be charged with a refrigerant which will operate in the subcritical region. The refrigerant that can be used in this circuit will be carbon dioxide refrigerant, while in the lower cascade circuit it will also be in the subcritical region. If this same CO2 refrigerant is used in an upstream cascade circuit, it is likely to operate in transcritical mode
