Problems solved by technology

This two-piece construction comes with reliability issues that can lead to failure when using standard reliability analysis, such as Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA), with the accompanying presence of an additional mechanical compression joint within the spark plug possibility of
In addition, it is believed that when a spark plug seat is arranged on a shaped part, the shaped part is subject to manufacturing variances associated with the two parts, which may cause consequential variations in the seat, which may affect the performance of the seat and the spark plug, and Performance of engines equipped with this spark plug

[0002] This patent application claims priority to US Provisional Patent Application Serial No. 60 / 821,343, filed August 3, 2006, which is incorporated herein by reference in its entirety.

[0003] The present invention generally relates to spark plugs, and more particularly, to a spark plug having an extended housing and an insulator.

[0004] Spark plugs have been used for many years as a means of igniting the fuel-air mixture in the combustion chamber of an internal combustion engine. Spark plugs can take many forms to suit specific engine designs and environments. Typically, spark plugs have a central electrode surrounded by an insulator disposed and secured within a metal cover or housing. The housing typically has threads that match the internal threads of the engine block. These threads allow the spark plug to be screwed into the hole using conventional tools. Additionally, the housing includes a ground electrode extendi...

Abstract

A spark plug for igniting gases in an internal combustion engine is disclosed. The spark plug has a center electrode, an insulator, a one-piece shell, and a terminal. The center electrode is in communication with an energy source. The insulator surrounds the center electrode. The one-piece shell surrounds and contacts the insulator for securing the insulator within the shell, wherein the shell has a plurality of threads near a first end and a ground electrode attached to the shell and aligned with a tip of the center electrode at a second end to define a spark gap. Further, a seat is formed in the shell between the plurality of threads and the ground electrode for sealing the shell against the engine. The terminal has a first end in communication with the center electrode and a second endwhich has a connector portion for connecting to the energy source.
