More or fewer working electrodes are used in other embodiments. In some embodiments of the invention, the reference electrode and counter electrode may be combined into a pseudo-reference electrode. An electrochemical cell is formed between the working electrode and the reference electrode. To make measurements of the target solution in electrical contact with the electrodes, various voltages - constant and time-varying - are applied between one of the working electrodes and the reference electrode and the resulting current is detected. For example, the concentration of ruthenium (Ru) in a sample can be determined by applying a constant voltage and measuring a current.
