Embodiment Construction

[0017] refer to figure 1 , schematically illustrates the main electrical components of a refrigeration unit 100, for example, a commercial or domestic refrigerator freezer. As will be more fully explained below, the present invention prevents warm, moist air from entering the fresh food compartment from the freezer compartment while the refrigeration unit 100 is undergoing a defrost cycle. In this way, the food in the fresh food compartment can advantageously be kept fresh for a longer period of time.

[0018] still refer to figure 1 , the refrigeration unit 100 includes a first or main compartment, such as a freezer compartment 101 , and a second fresh food compartment 102 . The first and second compartments 101, 102 are thermostatically controlled, respectively. The freezer and fresh food compartments 101 , 102 are linked by opening the damper door 104 to open an opening or passage between the two compartments 101 , 102 under constant temperature control. When a damper d...

Abstract

The present invention provides an adaptive defrost control method and apparatus for controlling a damper door during a defrost cycle. Before entering the defrost cycle, the adaptive defrost control logic determines whether the damper door is open. If the damper door is open, the defrost cycle is suspended until the door is closed. If the damper door is closed, the adaptive defrost control logic activates a barrier between the damper door motor and the power supply so that the damper door cannot be opened during the defrost cycle. After the defrost cycle is complete, the adaptive defrost control logic removes the barrier between the damper door motor and the power supply. The damper door can then be opened and closed as desired. Therefore, warm, moist air from the defrost cycle does not enter the fresh food compartment.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Patent Applications [0002] This patent application claims priority to US Provisional Patent Application No. 60 / 666,682, filed March 31, 2005, the entire teaching and disclosure of which is hereby incorporated by reference. technical field [0003] The present invention relates generally to refrigerators, and more particularly to the control of the air flowing between the freezer and fresh food compartments in the refrigerator. Background technique [0004] Many modern refrigeration units include a fresh food compartment for storing food above freezing temperatures. The fresh food compartment is usually separate from the main compartment or freezer, which is used to store food below freezing temperature. Typically, the temperatures of the refrigerator and freezer compartments can be controlled separately. To provide cooling to the fresh food compartment, the fresh food compartment is typically equipped with a movable damper door controll...
