Problems solved by technology

However, some of the available access networks or logical access nodes may not be connected to other networks, or for some other reason, it may not be possible to establish a connection therefrom to the desired target network entity
For example, a lost roaming agreement can cause this
Thus, when such network resources are selected eg based on the signal strength in the terminal's handover algorithm, the connection is lost after the handover

Embodiment Construction

[0015] The invention can be used in any telecommunication device to which a handover algorithm can be applied for selecting the applied connection settings for communication. Therefore, the applicability of the present invention is not limited to figure 1 The network techniques shown are instead applicable in other types of networks and in any type of combination of networks, for example in devices supporting the 3GPP UMTS system.

[0016] figure 1 An example of a telecommunication system is shown comprising a wireless local area network WLAN and a PLMN network, ie a GSM / GPRS network. A wireless local area network WLAN comprises access devices called access points AP, which provide wireless access to mobile stations MS and terminate broadband wireless links. The access point AP manages the wireless interface according to the wireless technology used: in one embodiment according to the IEEE 802.11 standard. A wireless network connection can also be established directly (ad-h...

Abstract

The invention relates to a method for arranging handover in a wireless telecommunications system. Connection settings are stored in a terminal, wherein at least one network identifier is associated with alternative connection settings, the network identifier identifying a target network reachable by a connection from the terminal. The network identifier associated with the currently applied connection settings is compared with the network identifiers associated with the other available connection settings. The connection settings associated with the same network identifier as the one associated with the currently applied connection settings are then selected. The handover may then be carried out by using the selected connection settings.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to scheduling handovers, and more particularly to determining connection settings to apply to new connections. Background technique [0002] Today, many wireless terminals are capable of providing diverse telecommunication services. For example, the terminal can provide circuit-switched voice and data transmission services, packet-switched data transmission services and messaging services, such as Short Message Service (SMS). These services may be provided via one type of network or different types of networks. For example, packet-switched data transmission services for a terminal may be provided by a connection to a wireless local area network (WLAN) access point, and circuit-switched services may be provided by a connection to a public land mobile network (PLMN). [0003] In order to provide continuous service to the user, the mobile terminal must perform a handover procedure to change from one channel or bearer servic...
