[0014] According to a preferred embodiment of the present invention, a prerequisite for providing the user with a media maintenance is the generation of means for subsequent analysis. This means is known as the Item Usage Record (IUL; see Table 1). Every action initiated by the user and processed by the recording device will generate a new IUL or update the IUL. The IUL is generated or updated each time eg if the recording device records a new item or if an already recorded item is played back or changed by editing. All item usage records are accumulated in a list available for each item.

Recording media maintenance support. Management of large amounts of data on storage media should be simplified. Accordingly, there is provided a method of maintaining a storage medium for maintaining a storage medium by generating, editing or reading record data related to the content and use of data items stored or to be stored on the storage medium. Data items are deleted or suggestions for deletion are provided based on recorded data from a storage medium.
