A selective calling receiver previously stores a plurality of visual patterns which are different in area from each other on screen. A counter function counts the number of times a single message was received for a predetermined period and then, according to the number of times the single message was received, a single visual pattern is selected from the stored visual patterns. The single message is displayed with the single visual pattern on screen.
