Problems solved by technology

Hemolysis may cause blood samples to be rejected and discarded
High flow rates can also create high differential pressures that can lead to catheter tip collapse, vessel collapse, or other complications that prevent or limit blood collection

Embodiment Construction

[0021] Referring now to FIG. 1 , a catheter assembly 100 is shown. Catheter assembly 100 is shown as a peripheral intravenous catheter, however, as will be readily appreciated by those of ordinary skill in the art, aspects of the present disclosure may be implemented in various other types of intravenous catheters and catheter assemblies. For example, aspects of the present disclosure can be combined with BD NEXIVA TM Closed IV Catheter System, BDCATHENA TM Catheter System, BD VENFLON TM Professional safety protection IV catheter system, BD NEOFLON TM IV Cannula System, BDINSYTE TM AUTOGUARD TM BC protected IV catheter system or another suitable catheter assembly, or otherwise. In some embodiments, catheter assembly 100 may comprise a peripheral intravenous catheter (PIVC), a peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC), or a midline catheter. Catheter assembly 100 includes a catheter adapter 120 having a distal end 122 that includes a catheter 130 . The catheter assem...

Abstract

A catheter can include a catheter adapter having a distal end including an intravenous catheter, a proximal end configured to receive a needle assembly, and an internal lumen extending between the distal end and the proximal end. The catheter assembly can include an extension tube that can include a first lumen and a second lumen. The first and second lumens can be in fluid communication with the inner lumen at a first end of the extension tube, and a second end of the extension tube has an infusion port in fluid communication with the first lumen and a blood collection port in fluid communication with the second lumen. An extension kit for a catheter assembly can include a first lumen coupled to an infusion port and a second lumen coupled to a blood collection port. The second lumen can include a flow resistance that is optimized to reduce hemolysis during blood collection.

Description

Background technique [0001] Catheters are commonly used to infuse fluids into a patient's vasculature. For example, catheters can be used to infuse saline solution, various drugs, or total parenteral nutrition. Catheters can also be used to draw blood from a patient. [0002] The catheter may be a trocar peripheral intravenous ("IV") catheter. In this case, the catheter can be mounted on an introducer needle with a sharpened distal tip. The catheter and introducer needle may be assembled such that the distal end of the introducer needle extends beyond the distal end of the catheter with the bevel of the needle facing away from the patient's skin. Catheters and introducer needles are typically inserted through the skin at a shallow angle into the patient's vasculature. [0003] To verify proper placement of the introducer needle and / or catheter in the vessel, clinicians typically confirm the presence of a "bleed back" of blood in the blood return lumen of the catheter assem...
