Embodiment Construction

[0227] An example of a drug delivery device is provided. One of the advantages may be that such a delivery device may provide a configuration with a relatively short length and a compact configuration. In some embodiments, the device is a disposable device, such as an auto-injector, having a syringe pre-filled with a drug, such as, for example, insulin or other types of medicaments used to treat diabetes. In some embodiments, the device includes a disposable syringe cartridge removably coupled to the drive housing such that the patient can replace the spent cartridge with a new and / or different drug Another cartridge. The drive housing may include electronics for sensing, indicating, displaying and / or communicating on-board and / or off-board steps in drug delivery.

[0228] The illustrated device utilizes an axially expandable drive belt as part of the drive assembly for dispensing the drug. as reference Figure 1 to Figure 3 It can be seen that the drive belt of the exempl...

Abstract

A drug delivery device usable with a drug container wherein advancement of a piston within the container expels drug. The device includes a housing and a drive assembly. The drive assembly includes a drive belt having a distal edge section and a proximal edge section. The drive belt has a retracted configuration defining a two-dimensional helix and an extended configuration defining a three-dimensional helix. The drive belt is movable from a retracted configuration to an extended configuration, wherein such movement defines a drive axis and advances the piston. In some embodiments, the drive belt may not rotate as it advances, while in other embodiments the belt does rotate. The disclosed drive assemblies include manually driven assemblies, spring driven assemblies and motor driven assemblies. The container may be replaceable to allow repeated use of the device. In some embodiments, replaceable cartridges including both drug containers and drive belts may be employed.

Description

technical field [0001] The present disclosure relates to medical delivery devices, such as injection devices. Background technique [0002] Conventional injection devices are often used to inject drugs into patients. For example, diabetics often use injection pens that utilize disposable cartridges that contain insulin. Such pens generally include an elongated rod that acts on a piston within a cartridge. When the rod advances the piston, the drug is dispensed through the needle into the patient. [0003] Throughout the injection process, including when the rod has reached the limit of forward advancement into the cartridge, the rod must protrude outwardly from the cartridge to engage the drive mechanism within the pen. When the rod has been fully retracted, it must also be accommodated within the pen so that the rod can be inserted into a new cartridge filled with drug. As a result, conventional injection pens are generally elongated and thin, wherein the length of the ...
