Embodiment Construction

[0028] As noted above, an improved apparatus for measuring uterine contractions and fetal heart rate of a subject is provided that overcomes existing problems.

[0029] Figure 1Aand B illustrate an example of an apparatus 100 for placement on a subject's abdomen 102 to measure the subject's uterine contractions and fetal heart rate (FHR) according to an embodiment. The device 100 described herein may also be referred to as a transducer, or in some embodiments, a combined toco-dynamometer (toco) ultrasound transducer. Uterine contractions referred to herein may also be referred to as uterine activity (UA). Uterine contractions include stiffening or tightening of the muscles of the uterus causing a force on the device 100 placed on the subject's abdomen 102 .

[0030] The device 100 described herein can comprise an enclosed volume. An enclosed volume can contain a volume of gas (eg, air). Such as Figure 1A and 1B As illustrated in , device 100 includes a rigid base (eg, a ...

Abstract

There is provided a device (100) for placement on the abdomen (102) of a subject to measure uterine contractions of the subject and a fetal heart rate. The device (100) comprises a rigid base (104) for placement on the abdomen (102) of the subject and a cover (106) configured to connect to the rigid base (104). The cover (106) comprises a flexible portion moveable in response to uterine contractions of the subject. The device (100) further comprises a fetal heart rate sensor (108) mounted on the rigid base (104) and configured to measure the fetal heart rate. The device (100) also comprises auterine contractions sensor (110) located within the device (100) and configured to measure the uterine contractions of the subject.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to the field of healthcare monitoring, and in particular to devices for placement on a subject's abdomen to measure the subject's uterine contractions and fetal heart rate. Background technique [0002] In obstetrics, especially during labor and delivery, two medical parameters are important for evaluating the health of the fetus. These two parameters are fetal heart rate and uterine contractions (or uterine activity). In order to determine fetal status, simultaneous recording of two parameters over time is important. Modern medical devices use external transducers to derive these parameters. Typically, an ultrasound Doppler (US) transducer and a strain gauge transducer are used for this purpose, where the ultrasound Doppler transducer includes a sensor for measuring fetal heart rate and the strain gauge transducer includes a sensor for measuring uterine contractions . [0003] When measuring uterine contractions and f...
