Problems solved by technology

However, the use of biomaterials presents several additional problems
For example, it may be difficult to maintain the position of the biological material relative to the jaws of the staples before and during staple ejection
It can also be difficult to keep the biomaterial in the desired position at the surgical site after sutures are completed
Additionally, it can be difficult to fabricate biomaterials into the desired shape and thickness
Commonly used plastic and molding manufacturing techniques are often not conducive to fabricating thin biolayers for use with surgical staplers
The fragile nature of many biomaterials also makes them difficult to use in surgical staplers because they lack structural support

Abstract

The presnet invention provides various exemplary matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) inhibiting adjuncts for surgical devices. In general, an implantable adjunct can be configured to be applied to tissue by a surgical stapler in conjunction with staples. The adjunct can have at least one medicant releasably retained therein that is configured to reduce a length of the epithelialization process. In other words, the at least one medicant releasably retained in the adjunct can be configured to speed up an inflammation stage of wound healing and / or a proliferation stage of wound healing and, accordingly, reduce an amount of time before a remodeling stage of wound healing begins. The at least one medicant can be configured to be released along the staple line defined by the staples.

Description

technical field [0001] The present disclosure generally relates to matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) inhibiting appendages for use in surgical devices. Background technique [0002] Surgical staplers are used in surgery to close openings in tissue, blood vessels, catheters, shunts, or other objects or body parts involved in a particular procedure. These openings may be naturally occurring, such as passages in blood vessels or internal organs like the stomach, or they may be formed by the surgeon during surgery, such as by puncturing tissue or blood vessels to create bypasses or anastomoses or by Cutting the tissue during the suturing procedure. [0003] Most staplers have a handle with an elongated shaft with a pair of movable opposing jaws formed on the end thereof for holding the staple between the jaws and for Nail forming. The staples are typically housed in a staple cartridge that can hold rows of staples and is typically disposed in one of the two jaws for ejecting the...
