[0011] As an anesthesiologist, I have identified significant problems associated with monitoring blood pressure in critical situations. One available approach has an inflatable finger cuff intended to provide data on blood pressure; however it has been reported that in some patients, especially critically ill or pediatric patients, the signal may be difficult to detect. These data are not as reliable as invasive blood pressure data.
[0012] The use of an inflatable finger cuff with a photoplethysmograph enables continuous monitoring of arterial pressure by generating a waveform that correlates with blood pressure. However, fingertip measurements often fail due to the patient's hypothermia during the procedure and in response to peripheral vasoconstriction (and hypotension). Furthermore, these systems are complex and do not function well under hypotensive conditions such as shock because they rely on bleeding from fingers that are compromised in the hypotensive state.
