Embodiment Construction

[0016] In some embodiments, methods and systems for assisting a user in determining real world measurements are provided. An imaging device, such as a camera within a cellular telephone, may capture an image of the scene. Transformations (eg, homography) may be determined, which may take into account one or more of: zoom, camera tilt, camera rotation, camera pan, camera position, and the like. Determining the transformation may include finding the location of a reference object (e.g., of known size and / or shape) in the image of the scene, and comparing real-world space attributes (e.g., size attributes) of the reference object to the location in the image of the scene Corresponding spatial attributes (eg, size attributes) comparisons. A virtual ruler can be constructed based on the transformation and superimposed on the image of the scene (eg, presented on the display of the imaging device). Users can use the virtual ruler to identify real-world dimensions or distances in th...

Abstract

In some embodiments, first information indicative of an image of a scene is accessed. One or more reference features are detected, with the reference features being associated with a reference object in the image. A transformation between an image space and a real-world space is determined based on the first information. Second information indicative of input from a user is accessed, and identifies an image-space distance in the image space corresponding to a real-world distance of interest in the real-world space. The real-world distance of interest is then estimated based on the second information and the determined transformation.

Description

[0001] CROSS-REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATIONS [0002] This application claims U.S. Provisional Application No. 61 / 586,228 filed on January 13, 2012 entitled "VIRTUAL RULER" and the application on July 31, 2012 entitled "Virtual Ruler (VIRTUAL RULER)" 13 / 563,330, which is hereby incorporated by reference in its entirety. Background technique [0003] Often, it is important to identify the exact size of an object in view. For example, it may be necessary to identify the size of an envelope to determine postage, a picture to determine frame size, a table to determine whether it will fit in a room, etc. While tape measures allow us to measure these dimensions, we may not have a tape measure when we wish to obtain a measurement. Contents of the invention [0004] In some embodiments, methods and systems for assisting a user in determining real world measurements are provided. An imaging device, such as a camera within a cellular telephone, may capture an image of the scene....
