[0082] Distraction and situational awareness

[0083] To safely and efficiently maneuver a motor vehicle, a driver must continuously receive sensory input from many different sources and respond to those inputs appropriately and in a timely manner. There is an element of cumulative workload associated with user participation in automated dialogs, and this factor is addressed in the present invention.

[0084] If the cognitive workload of managing inputs and responses exceeds a certain level, the driver may be distracted from the driving task, with potentially serious consequences. However, the person who is the nominal "driver" of the autonomous vehicle does not have the same responsibilities being performed. The term "autonomous vehicle" herein refers to a vehicle that has one or more autonomous systems to perform one or more common driving tasks without direct driver involvement. Examples of systems for autonomous vehicles include, but are not limited to: automatic pilot...

Abstract

The present invention relates to reducing driver distraction during spoken conversations, and in particular provides methods and systems for reducing user distraction and situational awareness associated with conversations of automated dialogue systems in vehicles. At dialog policy learning time, driver distraction is introduced as an input to a penalty allocator that assesses dialog quality, and dialog acts are expanded to include dialog and dialog act giving patterns that reduce driver workload on dialog. The automated dialog system policy develops during a learning procedure by optimizing the penalty such that the automated dialog workload decreases in response to increases in driver workload or expected workload. The present invention also provides methods and systems that respond to actual workloads in conventional vehicles as well as expected workloads in autonomous vehicles.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims the benefit of U.S. Provisional Patent Application No. 61 / 652,600, filed May 29, 2012, entitled "Reducing Distraction During Driver Spoken Conversations," the contents of which are hereby incorporated by reference Priority to this provisional patent application is pending and is hereby claimed pursuant to 37 CFR 1.78(a)(4) and (5)(i). Background technique [0003] Drivers of motor vehicles may experience distraction in certain situations, often characterized by increased mental workload. In a vehicle capable of autonomous operation there occurs a situation in which the nominal driver may lose situational awareness, which may be unsafe under certain expected workload conditions requiring driver response. Automated speaking and multimodal dialog systems are becoming increasingly common in motor vehicles and can be a factor in reducing a driver's potential distraction and / or reduced situational awa...
