A preparation method of the water holding agent comprises the following steps of: adding all the reaction raw materials in a ratio into a reaction kettle, heating the raw materials to the temperature of between 50 and 60 DEG C, performing heat preservation for 1 to 2 hours with stirring, delivering the product to a dryer, drying the product at the temperature of between 100 and 120 DEG C, granulating, and thus obtaining the water holding agent. The water holding agent is a solid water holding agent; meanwhile, inorganic effective ingredients and chemical fertilizers are added in the water holding agent so as to increase the nutrition and apply fertilizers to a farmland; and the water holding agent has low cost, synergistic and slow-release effects and good water holding effect.
