The chip comprises a substrate, wherein a communication module, a microcontroller and a memory are arranged on the substrate; remaining amount data of a consumable in the consumable container, an updating flag bit and a consumable remaining amount preset value are stored in the memory; identifier values which decrease in one way are stored at the updating flag bit; and the microcontroller is provided with a consumable remaining amount judgment unit for judging whether the consumable remaining amount is zero and an updating control unit. The method comprises the following steps of: judging whether the updating of the consumable remaining amount data is permitted according to the identifier value stored at the flag bit after the chip is electrified; if the updating is permitted, judging whether the consumable remaining amount data is zero by the consumable remaining amount judgment unit; and if the consumable remaining amount data is zero, updating the consumable remaining amount data to the consumable remaining amount preset value and performing decrement operation on the identifier values stored at the flag bit.
