[0023] In accordance with the principles of the invention, a data processing arrangement uses variable range coefficients to perform post-conversion processing on N-bit digital input values produced by an analog-to-digital converter. Use variable range factors to perform numeric conversions of numeric values with arbitrary units to numeric values with natural units, where the natural units and arbitrary units have a non-linear relationship. Variable range coefficients allow nonlinear relationships to be more closely approximated to improve the accuracy of the conversion. More specifically, the range of digital input values is divided into unequal regions, where each region is associated with a corresponding set of conversion factors. The size of the region is chosen to achieve a close piecewise linear approximation of a non-linear transformation relationship, such as a logarithmic relationship.
