[0015] The invention relates to a method for automatically docking a boarding bridge 1, 2 or a cargo handling bridge to a door 3, 4 of an aircraft 5 at an airport boarding gate. The aircraft is positioned and parked at a predetermined location with the aid of a non-contact measurement of the known distance between the aircraft and a fixed point, which distance is displayed on a display 6 mounted in front of the pilot on the aircraft, such as on an airport structure 26 . The display 6 is used to show the pilot the position of the aircraft 5 relative to the aircraft's stop and to provide the pilot with the type of aircraft concerned. The distance meter 13 and said display 6 are activated in a known manner by the comprehensive data system assigned to the airport. A control computer suitable for controlling the movement of the boarding bridge is also available.
