Embodiment Construction

[0033] Description of the preferred embodiment

[0034] An applanation tonometer in a first embodiment of the invention is indicated generally at 10 in the drawings. The tonometer 10 has a body or cover 12 . The body is substantially tubular and is conveniently grasped by the user. For this purpose it can comprise special parts which are molded or shaped to ensure grip.

[0035] The right end of body 12 is shown to include an inwardly turned flange 14 for retaining a plunger as will be described in detail below. There is also an outwardly extending flange 16 for holding the device and pressing it against the user's eye, as will be described in more detail below.

[0036] At the left end of the main body 12 as shown in the drawings, a second inwardly extending flange 18 is included.

[0037] On the outside of the body there is a scale 20 with numerical markings to indicate the force applied by the device. At least this portion of the body 12 should be a uniform segment, an...

Abstract

A tonometer (10), for determining intraocular pressure, has a body, which can be a transparent, substantially tubular body (12). A plunger (28) is located within the body and a coil spring (36) acts between the body and the plunger. A marker (24) member is frictionally retained within the body and is displaced relative to an external scale (20) on the body. In use, the tonometer is brought up against the eyelid (50) of a closed eye and the body displaced relative to the head of the plunger, until the pressure is sufficient to create a pressure phosphene. The device is then removed and the displacement of the marker member, indicative of the applied pressure is read. This reading corresponds to the intraocular pressure. The device may include a return member (49) for returning the marker member to a zero or rest position. <IMAGE>

Description

[0001] This application is a divisional application of Chinese invention patent application No.97195790.8. field of invention [0002] The present invention relates to an apparatus and method for measuring intraocular pressure of a human eye. The invention relates in particular to a tonometer for measuring the applanation cornea of the human eye. Background of the invention [0003] It is now known that excessive pressure on the eyeballs of people can develop glaucoma, an eye disease. This disease accounts for a large proportion of blindness. Studies have shown that this disease is found and exists in a large number of people, especially people over 40 years old, and more people over 50 years old. [0004] It is also now known that glaucoma can be detected at an early stage, thereby preventing damage to the eyes and blindness. Proper treatment and care can stop the disease from progressing and preserve useful vision. [0005] Due to the prevalence of glaucoma, many peo...
