[0012] In the case of young growing pets, such as puppies, the normal growth and development of the pet depends at least in part on the food it ingests. The main types of nutrients are water, protein, fat (lipid), fiber, vitamins and minerals. Proper and balanced intake of these nutrients can support normal growth and development of pets. Proteins contain amino acids. The amount of individual amino acids in a protein can be raised or lowered, and is sometimes said to affect amino acid balance. One such amino acid is the sulfur-containing amino acid known as methionine.

Abstract

A gender specific food for puppies is disclosed where the food includes at least about 0.25% methionine by weight and at least about 0.45% total sulfur amino acids. The food further includes a total dietary lipid level based on gender, and for maximizing body weight and length gains, lipid levels and the amounts of methionine are adjusted based upon the gender of the puppy.

[0002] Although consumers of pet care products currently have many suppliers and products to choose from, it can take considerable time, effort and research to determine from the available product choices which of the available choices best suits a particular pet's needs . This is especially true in pet food. While veterinarians and other experts can assist in recommending a given brand of pet food for a particular pet, pet food is typically mass-produced to meet the needs of common pets within a range of pets, often selected on the basis of the pet's age and / or size.
