Embodiment Construction

[0046] Figure 1A-1E is a schematic cross-sectional view illustrating aspects of various embodiments of an instrument access device 1 for use with a telesurgical system 2 . Such as Figure 1A As shown, the instrument access device 1 comprises a cuff 3 having a proximal opening 4 and a distal opening 5 . The interior 6 of the cuff 3 is hollow such that one or more surgical instruments can be inserted into the interior 6 through the proximal opening 4 and instruments can pass through and out of the interior 6 through the distal opening 5 . The envelope 3 may have various shapes as described in more detail below.

[0047] For reference, a central longitudinal axis 7 of the instrument access device 1 and cuff 3 is defined extending through the proximal opening 4 and the distal opening 5 . As shown, in this description, a location associated with an instrument access device is referred to as "proximal" or "distal". The term "distal" refers to a location closer to the surgical si...

Abstract

The application discloses a medical device for a surgical procedure, and particularly relates to a procedure for manipulating a surgical instrument end effector near a skin surface at an incision site. In accordance with some embodiments, an instrument access device is configured to couple to a wound retractor at a distal end of the device and receive a multi-instrument access guide in a port at a proximal end of the instrument access device with a cuff between the distal end and the proximal end defining a sealed cavity for maintaining inflation pressure. Various embodiments provide an apparatus for rotating an auxiliary port in an envelope about a port that receives an instrument access guide without twisting the envelope. Various envelope shapes are also disclosed. An instrument entry guide to align a surgical instrument shaft is also disclosed.

Description

[0001] priority claim [0002] This application claims priority to U.S. Provisional Patent Application No. 62 / 908,501, filed September 30, 2019, which is hereby incorporated by reference in its entirety. technical field [0003] This document relates generally to medical devices and, more particularly, to medical devices for use in minimally invasive surgical procedures. Background technique [0004] Surgical systems ("telesurgical systems"), such as those used in minimally invasive medical procedures, that operate at least in part using computer-assisted control ("telesurgical systems") can include large and complex implements for precise control of relatively small instruments. Such systems are sometimes referred to as robotic surgical systems or surgical robots. Intuitive Surgical, Inc. commercialized da A surgical system is an example of a telesurgery system. [0005] Various telesurgery system architectures exist. Some system architectures enable multiple (e.g., tw...
