Abstract

A collision warning system and method for safety operators of autonomous vehicles are disclosed in embodiments. According to an embodiment, a system perceives an environment of an autonomous driving vehicle (ADV), including one or more obstacles. The system determines whether the ADV will potentially collide with the one or more obstacles based on a planned trajectory. If the ADV is determined to potentially collide, the system determines a time to collision based on the planned trajectory and the one or more obstacles. If the determined time to collision is less than a threshold or the time to collision decreases for a predetermined number of consecutive planning cycles, the system generates a warning signal to alert an operator of the ADV. The system sends the warning signal to an operator interface of the ADV to alert the operator of the potential collision.
