Problems solved by technology

However, the disadvantage of ligament relaxation is that once the ligament is cut the ligament cannot regenerate, and the ligaments of the knee provide much of the needed stability to the knee
Additionally, because the extramedullary rod is positioned spaced from the true tibia, there may be visual distortion and difficulty in visualizing the midline or markers used to guide system adjustment
Computer navigation systems are more accurate and less destructive than the other two options, but they are very expensive and more complicated to use, often requiring a longer surgical time

Embodiment Construction

[0066] The devices, systems, and methods described below can be used in various embodiments to improve and / or facilitate total knee replacement (TKA) surgery, partial knee arthroplasty surgery, or on the tibia, typically the proximal end of the tibia Any other appropriate knee surgery with one or more cuts. In general, embodiments described herein provide means for positioning a bone cutter on a tibia. While the description below may frequently refer to TKA surgery, the described embodiments may also be used in partial knee replacement surgery or other knee procedures that perform tibial bone cuts.

[0067]refer to Figure 1A , an embodiment of a bone cutter positioning system 100 is shown attached to a tibia T. In this view, the tibia T is of the right leg and is in a forward orientation with the lateral L of the tibia T towards the left of the figure and the medial M of the tibia T towards the right of the figure.

Abstract

A device (400) for positioning a bone cutting guide (432) on a tibia may- include a tibial attachment member (402) including a varus / valgus adjustment member (406), an anterior / posterior adjustment member (408), and at least one aperture for coupling with a pin inserted into the tibia. The device may also include a stationary arm (410) fixedly attachable to the tibial attachment member (402) at one end and extending to a pivot joint (412) at an opposite end. Further, the device may include a pivoting arm (414) movably attached at one end to the stationary arm (410) at a pivot joint (412). The device may also include a light emitter (416) attachable to the pivoting arm (414). A depth selection member (424) movably coupled to the stationary arm (410) and configured to removably attach to the bone cutting guide (432) can also be included in the device. A stylus (426) removably attachable to the bone cutting guide (432) can also be part of the device.

Description

Background technique [0001] Embodiments described herein relate to medical / surgical devices, systems and methods. More specifically, embodiments described herein relate to devices, systems, and methods for improving knee surgery procedures. [0002] Approximately 550,000 total knee replacement surgeries (also known as total knee arthroplasty ("TKA")) are performed annually in the United States to treat chronic knee pain and dysfunction. As the U.S. and world populations age and become obese, knee replacement surgery will become more common as knee joints experience increasing levels of wear and tear from their increasing load and years of stress. Traditional TKA procedures are often effective but also very invasive and sometimes imprecise, resulting in less than ideal surgical outcomes. [0003] The knee joint is generally defined as the articulation point of the femur to the tibia. The structures that make up the knee joint include the distal femur, proximal tibia, patella...
