[0027] Medical navigation systems require a registration procedure to align the coordinate systems of the navigation system and the patient. The fiducial markers attached to the patient allow semi-automatic or fully automatic registration if a roadmap image including the fiducial markers can be obtained. However, in many cases the use of fiducial markers is not feasible and a potentially time-consuming and inaccurate manual registration procedure is necessary. The present principles provide a system and method for fast and accurate automatic or semi-automatic registration. In particularly useful embodiments, pre-procedural and post-procedural imaging are utilized to combine a prescribed set of image acquisitions in standard imaging planes.
