Problems solved by technology

This process induces segmentation errors in addition to symbol recognition errors
In addition, many of these devices have small handwriting input devices, making it difficult to perform accurate segmentation when the symbols may be written one on top of the other
This process produces an unacceptable level of error

Abstract

Recognition of handwritten words by an electronic device is described. A plurality of strokes are received at a common input region of the device. The strokes define a word comprising a plurality of symbols; a relative geometry of a first subset of the strokes defines a first symbol and a relative geometry of a second subset of the strokes defines a second symbol. The relative geometry of the first subset is not related to the relative geometry of the second subset. At least one stroke of the first subset is spatially superimposed over at least one stroke of the second subset. A processor determines the word based on the strokes without requiring recognition of the symbols. A word is determined at least in part on an entry sequence of subsets of the plurality of strokes.

Description

technical field [0001] Embodiments now described relate generally to the field of recognition of handwritten words. Background technique [0002] Recent technological advances have led to the increased prevalence of many small electronic devices, such as mobile phones, that include handwritten symbol input functionality. However, these small devices usually have an input device with a small symbol input area. These input devices often only have enough space for the user to write a single symbol. On these input devices, symbols cannot be written in a natural order that is natural to many languages (eg side by side and left to right). These input devices require symbols to be written one above the other. [0003] Segmentation of symbols entered using a small input device adds additional complexity to the symbol entry system described above, since the symbols are written one on top of the other. Current solutions for handwriting recognition on small input devices do exist...
