Abstract

A method of operating a navigation system to provide route guidance messages for traveling along a route is disclosed. A plurality of features visible from segments of the route are obtained from a geographic database associated with the navigation system. An importance rating is determined for each identified feature. The guidance message references the identified feature with the highest determined importance rating. Importance ratings take into account the persistence or seasonal dependence of the identified characteristics. The importance rating is adjusted in favor of the identified feature that is closest to the lane in which the vehicle is currently located.
